"I myself am strange and unusual" Lydia

Two newlyweds, played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davies, live in a large house in a country town. We see from the beginning of the movie that they are deeply in love and very happy except for constant interruptions from a relative who thinks that a large house should not be lived in by a childless couple.

On a trip to town they crash their car and die and soon find themselves back at home as spirits. They are left with a book 'for the recently deceased' which is supposed to help them enter the after life. When they finally realise that they can stay in there much loved home together forever, they happily carry on their daily lives. Then there peaceful rest is disturbed by the arrival of a new family who have bought the house.

The Deety family comprise of a daughter, her idiotic father and a superficial, bitchy stepmother. Adam and Barbara soon realise that the only way to get rid of the obnoxious family is to haunt them and they take on the advice of their caseworker Juno played by Silvia Sydney, (yes they do have caseworkers in the afterlife).

Unfortunately the Deetys remain totally unperturbed by our heroes' attempts at haunting. They see the ghosts as merely an opportunity to make money and achieve notoriety for themselves.

In desperation they turn to an independent bio-exorcist called Beetlejuice, played by Michael Keaton. A hideous groping creature that causes havoc and mayhem wherever he goes. There are some hilarious scenes when Beetlejuice enters the film and then proceeds to scare the Deetys with foolish consequences.

The film does have a happy ending, Michael Keeton is marvellous as Beetlejuice and Winona Ryder in particular gives a stunning and humorous performance walking around the house saying things like "My whole life is a dark room. One… big… dark… room". Glen Shadwick is also excellent as the pretentious house designer Otho.

This film is enormous fun in the most unusual way, which is Burton's finest talent; the story is original and interesting.
