Anton
Furst has a special place on this website for his unique and inspirational
vision as a designer. He was the production designer on "Batman"
as well as "The Company of Wolves" by the director Neil Jordan
and "Full Metal Jacket" by Stanley Kubrick.
Although it might seem unusual to mention other director's movies on
a site about Tim Burton, "The Company of Wolves" is one of my
favourite films and I highly recommend it. It has a seductive, atmospheric
beauty that is unusual. I first saw it many years ago and was aware of
the incredible talent that Anton Furst was capable of bringing to the
screen.
Anton
was trained at the Royal College of Art in London; where he studied
environmental design. He went on to win an
award for his work in Batman in 1989. He also designed the Planet Hollywood
restaurant in New York.
Anton was an extremely passionate man, his design work would leave a
lasting imprint on those who saw it on the drawing board or in film. It
is in the design work of the Batmobile and Gotham City, where baroque
sinister buildings stand in gothic splendour, that you will find the genius
of Anton.
Unfortunately
Anton took his own life within a relatively short time of reaching a peak
in his distinguished career as a production designer. No two people share
the same life experiences and no one can know why he did this, or judge
him for it. Anton did leave behind his designs, which will always be remembered.
I myself will never forget the haunting landscapes in "the company
of wolves" where Anton helped create the perfect production designs
or the dark complexity of his architectural drawings for the movie batman.
I
hope that by creating this part of the site, that it will find new people
interested in his work and in some way keep his name in people's minds.
I am not good at drawing however I do have an overactive imagination.
I looked at one of Anton's sketches and decided to do a picture for him,
as well as designing a special gallery for him. It is difficult to do
justice to such a greatly talented man, but I have tried my very best.
